I wasn't there when John R was there, but I can relate to the SIMs (sorta)...not to the extent of building a pretend house to match my own in the real world though......ha

One of the programmer's that I work with spends hours on end playing World of Warcraft, with his wife. They sit in their computer room, backs to each other, staring at their respective monitors.

I'm aware of the concept of Second Life, but I've never participated. I personally feel like there's enough things to keep me busy in my First Life.

CJ, I don't remember if you were at the insurance company when John R. was there. He was a BIG fan of SIMS, and spent enough time in SIMSVille to have a pretend house built exactly to match his real house in the real world. Games grab different people in different ways. As long as you're not neglecting your spouse, children, job, or attempting to have sex with a virtual prostitute, knock yourself out.

"My first life is so great I signed up for a second one... Everything in my second life was the same except I could fly." Dwight Schrute (or something to that effect).

I think this is a sign of people that are not willing to take risks in real life like going after that dream job, they sign up for a second one where they can take those risks. Rather then doing the hard stuff and working on a marriage, do the easy thing and sign up for a fantasy life. I'm glad I have my dream life now!

@Brook » I agree with you on the MySpace and Facebook thing; however, the interaction isn't instant like that of Second Life.

Do you remember the office episode where Dwight made a second life in second life?

I can believe it happened. Sad to say now, but I jumped on the Second Life bandwagon about a year and a half ago. I hung out, listened to "live" artists, played DJ at a charity event where $6000 was raised for a British children's charity. All of these were good things.

I also got to know people who were really messed up due to their vague definition of "real life" and their "second life"... Women logging off when their husband walked in the room in case he saw her dancing with a guy in SL.. And, well, it was just accepted in the SL community.

I met a gal who lost her job and got a stalker in real life due to her SL. It is tough to watch people loose a grip for a virtual world... But then again, we've been watching people do that via MySpace and Facebook for a while now..
